15th Virginia Militiaman’s Top Hat Shako – circa 1840’s. This beaver top hat has a leather plate attached by a slender belt with roller buckle. Attached to the leather plate are “V”, “15”, and “A” along with a 7 point star. All are stamped brass with silver plate finish. The hat is in very good condition on the exterior and displays well. The interior is plan, missing it’s lining and sweatband. I have never encountered another hat with this kind of attachment for the front plate. Obvi\ously it’s extremely practical as it can be buckeled on when the militia is mustered and it can be taken off to wear the top hat to church or business. Why buy two hats when this allows one to do. This is one of the neatest and unusual pieces of headgear we’ve ever offered.
